What do B6 and B12 vitamins do for your body? Here are some of the basics.

You can call B6 the brain vitamin. It activates enzymes that produce energy, neurotransmitters, red blood cells, and white blood cells that support the immune system. It removes the toxic amino acid homocysteine from your blood, which may help keep your heart healthy.

Is that all?

Nope.

The advantages of B6 are many, including its role as a coenzyme for the breakdown and utilization of carbs, fats, and proteins. You can get B6 by eating spinach, bananas, potatoes, salmon, and tuna, among other foods. You can also get B6 in supplements, especially natural whole food supplements like those offered by us at Food Research.

B12 is a bit more popular.

For instance, every one of us needs healthy blood and the human body requires B12 to make hemoglobin. Also, it's been shown that when your body is low in Vitamin B12, your homocysteine levels are elevated. Elevated levels of homocysteine can be risk factors for cardiovascular disease, dementia, and low bone mineral density. We have a supplement to assist in balancing those levels.

The body also needs B12 to make neurotransmitters and DNA. B12 supports adrenal function and a healthy nervous system. Some vegetarians, pregnant women, seniors, people who drink alcohol or take certain prescription drugs (including H-2 blockers and proton pump inhibitors, as well as the diabetes drug metformin) may have a B12 deficiency.

Food sources of B12 include fish, chicken, beef, milk, cheese, yogurt, and enriched cereals. And you can, of course, take natural whole food B12 supplements to treat a deficiency.

Many of us here at Food Research prefer to get our extra B’s in a single cap. The Vitamin B-6, B-12 & Folate supplement from Food Research is our B sharp supplement. Could it be yours?
